“Ontario is stronger when we have spaces to come together and celebrate who we are”: NDP calls for reliable funding for province’s cultural festivals

TORONTO – Leader of the Official Opposition Marit Stiles and Shadow Minister Attorney General with responsibility for 2SLGBTQI+ Issues Kristyn Wong-Tam (Toronto Centre) are calling for stable and reliable funding for festivals as millions attend the Pride Toronto Festival this weekend.

“Every year, festivals like Pride generate hundreds of millions of dollars, create thousands of jobs, and bring people together across the province,” Stiles said. “In times of external threats and uncertainty, Ontario is stronger when we have spaces to come together and celebrate who we are. That’s why the Government must step up to support the festivals that strengthen our communities, our economy, and our social fabric.”

“Ontario’s Government should be standing up for Ontario values. In a time of rising hate from our neighbours to the South, our government should be making it clear to 2SLGBTQI+ communities that Ontario stands with them. Pride Toronto is facing a $900,000 shortfall and is asking the Government for support. It's time for the Premier to show up for the communities he represents,” MPP Wong-Tam said.

MPP Wong-Tam has introduced a motion in the Ontario legislature that calls for stable and predictable funding for major cultural events. The Ontario NDP is calling on the Ford Government to vote in favour of the motion and make sure festivals like Pride can continue to happen in Ontario.
